Todays 2nd dumb question
If someone described themselves as a nerd would that A) Make you warm to them and want to meet them or B) Worry that they were really *sad* ?

I'm mostly pro-nerd. But sometimes if someone is a self-proclaimed nerd it means they are really really into some things I don't find all that interesting, like computers. So in certain contexts the "nerd" label might worry me. Actually, let me qualify that. If I was just going to be friends with this person, their nerdiness would never be an issue. But if I was thinking about dating someone and I found out they were a certain kind of nerd, I might worry about having things in common with them depending on stuff.

That having been said, I do think of myself as a nerd.

That's a good point I like computers for what they can do but the *inner* workings don't really interest me much or computer games for that matter. I guess a lot depends on your definition of nerd.

I would run to them with open arms
unless they were like the nerd that served me in tescos today and engaged me in conversation about being veggie and said stuff like 'i WILL give out a clubcard today I WILL' and things like that. He also told the people ahead of him that someone else was his 'really good friend' but that he was 'much crazier'. That kind of nerd I can leave.
I think I prefer geeks to nerds.
with a little no good rock'n'rolling thrown in.

I self-describe as a nerd if pressed, but I hate being called a geek!

why do you hate being called a geek?

I like being a nerd because it suggests to me someone who's bright and spent a lot of time learning things. The "geek" label suggests someone who's spent a lot of time being obsessive about something that's not really worth being obsessive about, like Star Wars or stamp collecting... I'm happy to be deemed above averagely intelligent, less happy to be called a lover of pointless trivia!
